Common Core Connections Language Arts

This is a good resource to have for the common core. The way the book is set up is very practical. The matrix at the beginning of the book is very helpful. The skill assessment is a bit hard if you ask me. It would need to be read to the students - at the beginning of the year this would be very frustrating for many of my students. This might be a nice end of the year check - to make sure they are ready for first grade. The pages are set up by the topics of the standards - literature, informational text, etc. Again, I feel there is a lot of text on the pages that my students, at least, would have trouble reading independently. I think I would use them in small groups with my students. I think I would have more success with them. I do like the "I can" statements at the end of the pages. Defiantly helps build confidence.@Carson-Dellosa Publishing Company I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson-Dellosa and I received this product for free to try and review.

Common Core Connections Math @Carson-Dellosa Publishing Company

This is a good resource to have for common core math. I like the matrix that shows what pages go with what common core standard. The assessment in the beginning of the book would be very helpful to group students according to their needs. This would be really helpful if a school district did not have a math program to use. The worksheets are grouped according to the strands of the standards - counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, etc. I'm not sure these pages will be able to be used independently by kindergarten students. Once students had been exposed to some of these skills I think they would be better at working through these pages.

Teacher Week '13

This is the story of my life! Day late and dollar short! I had every intention of starting this on Monday! Honest! Who knows what happened?? OK We all know what happened! Back to School getting ready!! LOL

I think this 10 fun things will be hard- I don't think I am that fun! I will try!!

1- I have taught second grade for 16 years! Well, 14 - because I took a year off with each child. Then I moved to kindergarten! It was always my dream to teach kindergarten! Dreams do come true! Second graders do not feel bad!! I loved it!!! But I think my true calling is kindergarten!

2- I am HAPPILY married to the best man in the world! We have been married for 26 wonderful years and have known each other for  30 years! WOW!!! It doesn't seem possible but so happily true! I really believe that we bring out the best in both of us!

3- I have 2 wonderful children! Our daughter is going to be a sophomore in college!!! WHAT?!?!?!?!? She is studying education also - but doing that secondary thing in math!! haha I don't understand it but totally support her! Good thing that we each find the best place to teach! She will be a MAZing!!! Our son will be a junior in high school! Another OH MY!!! He is the best! Always makes me laugh!!

4- I love the beach! I would love to be able to have a house there one day! Even though I don't swim in the ocean water! I especially love the Maine beaches!

5- I love music!! My ipod is very eclectic! I have 80's music ( just gave my age away didn't I??), hard rock, country, classics ( Rod Stewart doing those from 40's and 50's), pop, alternative, easy listening... My favorite this summer is Blurred Lines! Really if it has a good beat, I will sing and dance to it!!

6- When I was growing up, I learned to play clarinet - even though I wanted the drums or the trumpet or the trombone! My mom wanted me to play a "girl instrument".  I also took organ lessons. I loved that when I was taking them. We have a piano and when I find the time I sit down and play... not often enough!

7- I love setting up my classroom! I know we all do! It is just so much fun! It seems to be so much more popular now though! YEA!!!

8- I want to go get my doctorate one day. That is another dream - to teach at a college. One day...

9- My favorite show is Sex and the City. I know it's not on anymore! :( I can probably recite every episode any way! I often think that if I hadn't gotten married, I would have moved to NYC. lol

10- I know more about John Deere lawn and garden tractors than I ever thought I could/ would! Some how my husband and son started collecting them! They have taught me tons!

I hope these were fun!! I think I'm pretty boring - so I hope these facts didn't bore you!

Currently - August

I know! 2 posts in one day! So much for that plan to get better at blogging! I figured while I was working on one, I better do the other! I did have some issues with the currently in paint- trouble viewing it in a size I could see! So if there are typos, please forgive me! Enjoy the last days of freedom everyone! And for those of you that are back- You can do it!  Oh there is another thought- getting the 16 year old up for school! That is never pretty! lol

Setting Up!

Well, it's that time of the year! I went in to start --- that's always the hardest part! Where to start?!?!? Well, it didn't look so bad 'cause everything was shoved into cabinets, drawers, wherever! I did get a good bit accomplished. It's not perfect yet, but it will be will be close! I took my time and organized somethings that were really bugging me. :) That felt good to get done. I kept a list handy of things that I needed to pick up or have the hubby fix. He did a great job, by the way! I only have one item I can't find... ok, it's kinda important too! It's the av adapter for the cd player! Where did I put that???? I'm sure I will find it... Please send me good wishes!
I haven't been back in lately but I have been working on some stuff at home! I'll get back there! Still enjoying the relaxing part of summer vacation! Why does school start so early?? Most of us don't get up with roosters any more, so we could start later... just saying! lol

Carson Dellosa Thinking Mats

Think! Think! Think! Thinking Mats are here and they are ready for the common core! There are 15 mats  in color with manipulatives in color also. It even comes with a resource guide that has center response sheets. All of the common core topics are covered. I do kinda wish they had color coded the topics. That would have made it easier to pull the mat that fits with the topic we are working on. Oh, well! These will be great to use with small groups of students that need to practice this skill. I do think I will laminate the pieces before I use them. They feel pretty sturdy but we all know how kids are on them! The directions are on the front of the mat  - for the most part, I think the students will be able to read them after we get reading! The mats also have a theme – so you can pull them out to review or use during a content theme. They are very open ended so it will not be a once and done activity. Students will be able to work in pairs or individually with these mats, making them a great center addition. Oh – they come in a handy box, that isn’t too big, to store them all in. Always helpful for us teachers with little storage! J I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson-Dellosa and I received this product for free to try and review.Check out the video -

Carson Dellosa Everyday Fun and Game Cards

Everyday Fun and Game Cards are fun! What a great treat for kids! What a fun way to review and learn! This double set of cards is a great addition to the family and to the classroom. The cards are hooked together so you don’t have to worry about them falling all over the place. The cards are divided and color coded (I heart color coding!) by different topics – jokes! (Oh my! Once they learn how to tell a joke- there is no going back!) , math – counting, shapes, sets; fun facts – how great to make connections with on vacation or just around; language arts- beginning sounds, matching letters, finding letters, sequencing; word play – rhymes, opposites, categories;  and puzzles – matching shadows, same pictures, finding hidden objects. These are jam packed!! That was all in one pack people! The other pack has more of the same great stuff! Total of 158 cards! WOW! They are nice and laminated already – you could use a wipe off marker on them if you wanted to do that. The answers are on the back in a different color – in case you don’t know what color a lobster’s blood is! ;)  These would be great for families in the car on trips, in restaurants, waiting at the doctors, etc. I think they would be great in the classroom too- fillers waiting till everyone gets to the rug or filling in a few minutes waiting for lunch, or even for the question of the day every morning! What a fun treat for kids! I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson- Dellosa and I received this product for free to try and review.

Summer Splash Travel Activity Book

On the road again! It is summer and the living is easy – unless you are traveling with little ones! Lol Now my kids are bigger – doesn’t make it easier sometimes – but I would have loved to have had this Summer Splash Travel Activity Book from Carson Dellosa when they were little! When we would go on long trips, I would always pack little surprises and treats for the kids to open en route. This would have been one of those! There are some great pages in here – some academic minded and some more fun and games. The pages have color and are thick enough to not rip easily. Now – some of the games need another person to play – so you could even take it in to a restaurant to help with the waiting. It does have an answer key also. And if you don’t go on a road trip- just use it to review skills and interact with your child! J   I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson--Dellosa and I received this product for free to try and review.

Task Card - Carson Dellosa

Right on task! Task Cards from Carson-Dellosa are here! There are 100 task cards in the box – colorfully divided in half by math and language arts. They are common core aligned too! The cards are labeled with the common core on the back so you can relate it to your own activity. The students can also write on them – laminated for easy use. I can see these being used in several different ways. They can be used in small reading groups or with the whole group – a quick review for the common core standard being taught or a review from previous one. I could also see them being used in morning work to review – an activity along with a message. I wanted a checklist to make sure I was covering them all – and then I read the directions included! J We all know teachers have a hard time with directions, right?!?!?! Lol Anyway – the directions tell you to go to!   You can sign up for FREE! J Then pick common core activities and you get the checklist, the answer key, a scope and sequence and a recording sheet for the students to color in when they are done. This just adds to the ways you can use them! I’m even thinking later in the year, the students could read most of them by themselves and work on them together in centers or when they finish early.
