This is the class singing Albuquerque Turkey after our Thanksgiving feast! This is one of my favorite days in kindergarten! It is so much fun to smell the turkey and the other trimmings all morning and  then enjoy feasting together! Thank you to all the adults in the class that helped in any way! You are all so busy and yet were willing to help with preparing/supplying a whole other part for our feast. What a wonderful job I have! I am so THANKFUL for my students and their families!

Book Cases Organized

This is the before of the book closet! Well, just about before - I almost forgot to take a picture! This is a mobile cabinet that houses my books. I have 3 cabinets like this. These are the books that go with each theme/unit I teach. It is organized in order that I teach the units. But as you can see - I just put stuff in front or even on top of the books - you know, the books that you find after you put the rest away, or the one you buy but don't take the time to put away correctly! :) I finally decided how I wanted to organize it better. I figured out that those cute little baskets (top corner) fit two deep and and four across. AND... they are $1 a piece at Christmas Tree Shop! So I went shopping!!! They didn't have any at the one local store. :( So I went the opposite direction and went to another Christmas Tree Shop! They were out of them also!! I started to panic! I finally decided what I wanted to do to make it easier and more efficient and I couldn't!! :( So when my husband and son asked if I wanted to tag along as they picked up a tractor (they collect lawn and garden tractors) I checked to see if there was a Christmas Tree Shop near and there was! So I tagged along and begged to stop! Of course, they did:) They are great guys! Anyway - I bought 70 boxes!!!! They are 11x11. I can fit 4 across and go 2 deep on each shelf! So I started and I am thrilled! I put each theme into a basket. Ok - so took 2 baskets! And Ok - I don't need to buy any more books, but I'm sure I will! :) I can now just go pull out the baskets that I need and things won't be falling out of the cabinet! So here are some more pictures of the progress!
This was some of the stuff that was in-front of the books!
First shelf finished!!
 Two shelves!
Look at this!! I am sooooo happy about this! I even got two baskets over from the other book cabinet! YEA!!! Less space!
Here is the beginning of the second cabinet! The top two shelves were books and the bottom two were puzzles and games. Of course, I didn't always use everything on those bottom two shelves because.... they were on the BOTTOM!
Here is the second cabinet finished!! I have all my books in two cabinets!! The top two shelves continue to have the themes. After that the baskets have the books that don't fit into the themes I am using - many left over from my second grade days (but who can get rid of them???). So I have them organized by titles in ABC order. That way when I want a certain one or a friend wants to borrow one - I can find it quickly. I even had room to put some extra "things".
This is the "new" third cabinet! Puzzles and games on the top two shelves. Math materials on the third one. Indoor recess materials on the bottom! I <3 this!!

Carson-Dellosa Publishing Company I reviewed the Summer Bridge Activity Book for Grade K to 1. It is a great deal if you are looking for a resource to to help your child over the summer! It covers all the standards that were taught over the school year in my classroom. It is sectioned off into daily work that spirals through the different topics - phonics, letters, numbers, graphing, handwriting, etc. There are also great fitness ideas to get the kiddos moving! There are also many bonus activities for science and social studies activities! AND... you can get on line and register your book to get a free mobile app! How very modern learning has gotten! ABC Countdown!

I can't believe that we have started our ABC countdown! Where did the year go? I love this idea of reviewing the letters in such a fun way! The kids were so cute showing their stuffed animals for A. Why didn't I take pictures? I need to upload the pictures from the bubbles. You would have thought I had given some of them gold! My favorite was one little one asked "Can we take these home at the end of the day?" Before I could get my answer out, another boy said, "NO, she will need these for next year's kindergarteners!" The look on their face was priceless when I said, "Of course you will get to take them home at the end of the day! They have your initials on them don't they?" That is what is so great with kindergarten! I think they are picking up the hint though that there are some goodies with the letters. After we tallied our favorite candy, one girl said, "This has made me hungry for candy." She had that look in her eye like please have some for us! Of course I did!!! I love to eat it too!

On a side note- I like the new blogger info! I was so excited seeing that my blog was visited 19 times today! WOW!!! I need to get my act together and blog more often... goal, goal, goal! It needs to become routine! Thanks for all of you that stop by!

Keep checking back in!

Oh, one more thing - the kids are LOVING the gumball machine and reading to other teachers!! They are soo proud of their accomplishments! :) It does a heart good!

Thursday, April 5, 2012

I am using the @Carson-Dellosa Publishing Big Gun Ball Machine Bulletin Board set. It is very colorful and cute!  It came with the gum ball machine, an overlay for the machine door, a bubble gum header and 32 gumballs in bright colors.  It also has a reproducible of a gumball machine. I am using it in my classroom as an incentive for reading! I have written the student’s names on the gumballs. I put the names on with clips. I emailed all of the staff at my school and let them know about this bulletin board as you walk into my classroom. The staff can pick a student’s name off the machine and get that kid to read them a book from their book baggie in their chair pockets.  I put a small box on the bulletin board for the “used gumballs”! That way all of the children will get picked before a second round. I can use the reproducible as a take home note to let the caregivers know that the students were reading to an adult.  My students were VERY excited about this! They were very curious when they saw the bulletin board go up, but I didn’t tell them till the next morning what the gumballs were all about. Our music teacher stopped down yesterday and picked a student. He was so excited – almost couldn’t decide which book to read to her! I love this set because it is so versatile. I will be able to use it for many different things over the years – I can use it for this same project or have the students use the gumballs for lunch count, as a management board –either putting in or taking out the gumballs, as writing prompt ideas, as a classification activity or as a welcome to the classroom sign. The students loved it as soon as they saw it! The bright colors make it look so happy! They loved finding their names on the gumballs. It made them very proud that they can read to other people! I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson-Dellosa and I received this bulletin board set for free to try and review.

Carson Dellosa

The new Learning Spot Lesson from Carson Dellosa that I have used in my classroom is the Introduction to Phonemic Awareness. I like the set up – first we have whole group time to introduce the activity and the skill. Then I can have the students use the student activities independently during centers. It follows the same format so the kids are familiar with what to do.  It practices beginning, middle and ending sounds! You could get a free lesson by going to www.CDLearningSpot.com/BA  I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson-Dellosa and I received Learning Spot Lesson product for free to try and review.

Clutter Free Linky Week 3

Well, I only got to two shelves this week. BUT - that is two shelves more than last week! I think they look pretty good! I need to go back an inventory what is on them, but that will be easier because I can see what I have!
This pile went to two VERY grateful friends that teach first grade! The teacher who got there first was very happy to get new center activities. These were things ordered because they said "K" - but, alas, they were not! There are sight word pages to write on and wipe off, sentence stamps, sight word games, etc. Teacher one had a few of the things, so she left the rest for teacher number two. :) Teacher Two - was ECSTATIC! She couldn't believe that I was sharing with her! Some things weren't even open. Well, there was no reason to open them when they wouldn't have been able to use them!
This pile - three VERY old things! The two small activities I had when I was teaching second grade at another building! The box was a left in the room box! :) It was rather large and had an old picture set of opposites from Frank Schaeffer. Remember those??? LOL I knew I didn't need or want them and the other two teachers wouldn't either. So, I put them in the faculty room with the plan to ditch them by Friday if they were not gone. I was the last to leave when I put them in the faculty room. By the next morning... 45 minutes before we have to be there - the two small boxes were GONE! By lunch the large box was GONE!!! Glad I could help some more people!

This was the garbage can from the two shelves. :) Yes, I put a lot of work and time into some of it, but I never used it, so it went! There were some REALLY OLD materials in there too that were left in the room!

I feel really good about what I got done! I was hoping to get some more done, but had a dentist visit to get to. I'm hoping to do some more this coming week. I like the inventory sheet - so I need to print it and USE it! Need to remember to bring the tape measure on Monday too! Not sure if I will need containers for these two shelves - they are mostly box activities. I'll see what the recommendations are. Can't wait for Sunday's post at  http://clutterfreeclassroom.blogspot.com/  This is fun!

Clutter Free Classroom Assignment

The Closet Abyss! This is the closet with the language arts materials - alphabet recognition, rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, sight words, oh my! It was looking better till I bought more stuff and tried to put it in here! It is somewhat organized- rhyming stuff on one shelf, abc stuff on another, sight words on another, for the most part! This is the only large cabinet I have like this. :(  Is it any wonder why I don't use all that I have? AND when summer gets here - everything in the classroom has to be packed away - which means even more is shoved into all these closets!

This is above the hooks for the kid's coats. It is organized but not pretty.

These cabinets hold my literature. The bags are letter bags. I have one for each letter. The other stuff on top is stuff that doesn't fit into a cabinet. This area of my room is what I call the mud room. When you come into the classroom, this is where you come first. Then there is an opening right at the snowman to get into the main part of the classroom. I <3 having this mudroom, but I don't think I am using the space to my advantage. The books are all grouped by topic so I can pull what I need for each unit. Again though... when I get more (Hi my name is Kristin and I'm a Scholasticaholic!) there is no room to add it!

This is the other corner of the mud room. The classroom door is to the right of the filing cabinets and opposite this is the coat hooks. The plates are for the snack grant we got. So we have to store 2 sleeves in our classroom.

This is the back wall of my classroom. These cabinets were new when we renovated. I like them cause you can fit posters in them. Each drawer is for a month and any special unit we do during that month is also in them. I got rid of my teacher desk about two years ago. I LOVE IT! I use the top for my rack with the weeks worth of materials and pens and things. But it looks cluttered to me.

This is the math cabinet abyss! That is it- two shelves! Wonder why I can't find anything! Some of the plastic shoe boxes out in the mud room have math materials in them also.

This is the teacher/reading group table. I did get rid of those piles the next day. The black organizer is from Staples and it spins. :) I keep my assessment materials in it and pens, etc.

These are the before pictures for the Clutter Free Classroom Week 1 Project! Before pictures of the classroom, so all can see the wonderful transformation:) I can't believe that we are all brave enough to let others see these pictures! lol Here goes!

Clutter Free Classroom Project

I love organizing! I think I am pretty good at it but one can always improve!:) So.... I am going to follow along and see what I can learn. She wants us to write some goals. So here it goes: 1. Find the materials in the small closet that holds my center/language arts materials. 2. Use all the materials that I have bought and/or made over the years! 3. Save money and time but not buying more but using what I have! Plus all the ones that are on her blog page:)
