Chapter 5

Story Problems and Story Mats! That is what we are all about in kindergarten! The students love making up stories to practice some, some more and some, some went away! This will be easy to incorporate into the stations. We do these types of  lessons often. The biggest part - as always - will be to model, model, model appropriate behavior for doing this activity in stations.I love watching the kids while they work with these mats - you can really see them click when they get the concept of what they are doing and not just moving bears on and off. :)

I think that my motto for this year is to relax and NOT worry about taking the extra time to work on stations and behaviors and activities. Somehow there is always that little voice in the back of my head reminding me about the extensive curriculum that needs to be covered. I need to just remember that it will all get done and better to be done well than done in a hurry!

    However, if time isn't taken to work on the work ethic and behavior at stations, you may come to regret it. Kinders love to work at stations because it's active, vocal, and short term. But if the management behaviors are not widely and well practiced, when you "do" want them in stations - they won't do well. The 4-6 weeks in the fall is a good investment for the rest of the year.

    That is what I am saying Ardisk! I wish we didn't have to worry about report cards for that first 9 weeks though. We spend so much time working on the management it seems so unfair to assess the poor k's!

I am using the @Carson-Dellosa Publishing Big Gun Ball Machine Bulletin Board set. It is very colorful and cute!   It came with the gum ball machine, an overlay for the machine door, a bubble gum header and 32 gumballs in bright colors.   It also has a reproducible of a gumball machine. I am using it in my classroom as an incentive for reading! I have written the student’s names on the gumballs. I put the names on with clips. I emailed all of the staff at my school and let them know about this bulletin board as you walk into my classroom. The staff can pick a student’s name off the machine and get that kid to read them a book from their book baggie in their chair pockets.   I put a small box on the bulletin board for the “used gumballs”! Clutter Free Classroom Assignment

The Closet Abyss!This is the closet with the language arts materials - alphabet recognition, rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, sight words, oh my! It was looking better till I bought more stuff and tried to put it in here! It is somewhat organized- rhyming stuff on one shelf, abc stuff on another, sight words on another, for the most part!This is the only large cabinet I have like this. :(   Is it any wonder why I don't use all that I have? AND when summer gets here - everything in the classroom has to be packed away - which means even more is shoved into all these closets! This is above the hooks for the kid's coats. It is organized but not pretty. These cabinets hold my literature. The bags are letter bags. I have one for each letter. The other stuff on top is stuff that doesn't fit into a cabinet. STEM Challenge

STEM! I love doing hands on activities with the students! Always have. Just ask the husband who has made, carried, or bought tons over the years. He’s a keeper! Anyway – I was a little nervous at first when Carson Dellosa sent me their new Stem Challenge cards. The box said Grades 2-5. L I teach kindergarten.   But guess what??? They will be fine for us! They will not be independent cards, but we can still use them! The CCS have upped the rigor for science, so my teaching BFF’s and I have been working through what we need to add and change. These will be great! There are two different versions – STEM Challenges and STEM Challenges Seasonal. So I opened up the seasonal first. Three tabs in the box – Spring/Summer, Winter, Autumn. I was thrown off when there was nothing behind the Autumn tab. Then I realized that the cards are in FRONT of the tabs. (I may have been sitting outside in the sun too long!
